Good lateral support matters too, since side-to-side stability is just as important as front-to-back during a typical workout.

What is a zero-drop fitness shoe?

A zero-drop shoe keeps the heel and forefoot level, mimicking a barefoot stance to encourage better posture and balance during heavy lifts like squats. Transition gradually from a higher-drop shoe, since your calves and Achilles need time to adapt to the different loading pattern.

Are dedicated weightlifting shoes different from cross-trainers?

Can I wear my fitness shoes outside?

It's discouraged. The specialized rubber tread designed for indoor grip wears down quickly on abrasive concrete, shortening the shoe's usable life. Outdoor dirt tracked indoors can also create a slipping hazard on gym floors, and many facilities don't allow shoes worn outside.
